Honore Daumier

With its freshness, energy and exactitude , its iconoclastic distortions , its adolescent vigour , Daumier’s work was  ( at the time )  a new sort of Slang in the language of drawing . Coming a couple of decades after the controlled and beautifully observed  work of Gillray and Rowlandson , Daumier arrived with a completely new sense of movement , physicality . It’s as if he’d found the bottle of steroids at the back of the garret , or at least a performance-enhanced pencil .    ( 2008 is the 200th anniversary of Daumier’s birth , so there will be chances aplenty to see his work . )
