Inspired by the book by Ted Hughes ( see elsewhere on this list ), this Brad Bird-directed feature was not, I gather, a commercial success, but I do remember very good reviews . It was a direct inspiration to me and the animators at Jellyfish Pictures when we were working on “ Suba”. We loved the way the 3D computer animation of the robot married up with what I assume is traditional 2D character animation . I get a deep and geeky pleasure from that, as I did with the similar sequences in “The Rescuers DownUnder”, ( a Disney feature in which the villain drives a CGI lorry ). It was that elegant elision of detailed mechanism and softer, organic forms that I was hoping our story of gladiatorial jungle robots could also pull off.
