In the mid to late seventies, Kitaj’s work struck what seemed to me to be a perfect balance between the loose and intuitive side of his drawing/painting and the more careful and beautifully rendered. I’m touched, too, by the mysterious assemblage of the elements,by the way the sum of these scattered fragments seems to be much greater than it should be. There is mystery here……he talks of Eliot’s Waste Land…..wilful distortion….and beauty, in spite of the Auschwitz gatehouse at the top of the picture. Echoes and references to older, classical paintings suggest a sort of music…….. >
