Mati Klarwein : Photo-realism again, but skewed through a poetic and psychedelic prism.I first saw Klarwein’s extraordinary work on a Santana cover, “Abraxas”, I think, then shortly after, on Miles Davis’s “Bitches Brew”. I was seduced on the instant. He was giving me the recipe I craved,in which the primitive, the exotic, the magical “other”, was captured, rendered in fiercely exact detail, and brought, like a living genie in a bottle, right into the room where some of my favourite music was playing. These paintings were the altar pieces, even the sacraments, of all that New Voodoo.
