Gustave Doré

The Dover edition of Doré’s “Rabelais” illustrations is a wonderful collection indeed . The original was published in 1873,and superficially ( or at first glance ) the illustrations have that musty , mid-Victorian feel. But  look a little closer and the modernity of the work is striking, especially in the more caricatured pieces. The chiaroscuro is very exciting and the action drawings, where knights tumble, or thieves dangle from gibbets , are really masterly.Much fun to be had here . >
