Hans Holbein

Hans Holbein : Not only the paintings of the courtiers around Henry VIII….check out those silks and satins, furs and chains…but also, maybe RATHER,the softly spoken and still-fresh–after-five-hundred-years  drawings, drawings of real living and breathing people, as real as you and me .The mastery is modest but unmistakeable. Not once,on coming across these drawings, have I been less than awed .Robert Hughes  points out that “ No one else got the knobbly, mild face of English patrician power so aptly, or saw so clearly the reserves of cunning and toughness veiled by the pink mask.”
Again, I couldn’t decide exactly where to point on the Net, but there’s Holbein aplenty .
