Gustave Doré :    The Dover edition of Doré’s “Rabelais” illustrations is a wonderful collection indeed . The original was published in 1873,and superficially ( or at first glance ) the illustrations have that musty , mid-Victorian feel. But  look a little closer and the modernity of the work is striking, especially in the more caricatured pieces. The chiaroscuro is very exciting and the action drawings , where knights tumble , or thives dangle from gibbets , are really masterly.Much fun to be had here .
